Digital Sustainability Training

Build the capabilities to embed environmental sustainability into information systems and Enterprise Architecture. This two-day program combines a practical reference model, real-world cases, measurement exercises, governance, and TOGAF® ADM application.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this two-day training program, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the main environmental impacts and systemic dynamics associated with ICT.
  • Use the Digital Sustainability Reference Model to structure a transformation.
  • Build awareness, skills, sponsorship, objectives, and governance for digital sustainability.
  • Integrate sustainability requirements and constraints across business, application, data, and technology architectures.
  • Assess lifecycle impacts, develop measurement capabilities, and make environmental data actionable for stakeholders.
  • Engage suppliers, procurement teams, customers, partners, and regulators in systemic change.
  • Define sustainable operating practices and architecture principles.
  • Apply the TOGAF® ADM, particularly the Preliminary Phase, Architecture Vision, and architecture requirements, to a digital sustainability initiative.

Description

This two-day instructor-led training program gives participants a practical method for making environmental sustainability part of information systems strategy, architecture, delivery, operations, and governance. It begins with the environmental impact of ICT, including greenhouse-gas emissions, energy and water consumption, raw-material use, and electronic waste, before introducing the Digital Sustainability Reference Model.

Participants then explore how to build a sustainable digital culture, turn ambition into an actionable transformation program, reshape business, application, data, and technology architectures, and measure lifecycle impacts from manufacture through use and end of life. The program also addresses suppliers, procurement, customers, regulatory reporting, sustainable operations, architecture governance, and the use of the TOGAF® ADM to frame and guide the transition.

Case studies, practical exercises, and assessment preparation help participants connect the framework to real organizational decisions rather than treating sustainability as a separate reporting activity.

Agenda

Day 1 — From environmental challenge to sustainable architecture

  • The environmental impact of ICT: climate, energy, water, materials, and e-waste
  • Relevant Open Group standards: TOGAF®, ArchiMate®, and Open Footprint®
  • The Digital Sustainability Reference Model
  • Developing a sustainable digital culture through leadership, skills, communication, and frugal innovation
  • Moving from vision to action: risks, sponsorship, alignment, goals, business-model considerations, and transformation planning
  • Architecting a sustainable information system across business, application, data, and technology domains
  • Practical case studies and architecture choices

Day 2 — Measuring, influencing, operating, and governing

  • Measuring information-system impacts across the full lifecycle
  • Building carbon-footprint capabilities and making measures actionable
  • Practical measurement exercise using the GARB calculator
  • Working with providers, procurement, customers, partners, and authorities
  • Operating a sustainable information system: asset lifecycles, infrastructure, applications, data, and user support
  • Governing the transition through decision criteria, roadmaps, and architecture principles
  • Using the TOGAF® ADM to frame the initiative, define the vision, secure the mandate, and manage requirements
  • Practice assessment, correction, and consolidation

What's included
